We were approached by the newly refurbished Dovecot Studios in Edinburgh to design and make a reception desk for their front of house staff.
An old sawmill near to our workshop led us to rescue a batch of spalted Sycamore from the local Oxenfoord Estate. This was sawn and air-dried and kilned at the same sawmill a mere four miles from our workshop.
This Sycamore was used in an L-shaped desktop with a herringbone pattern forming the corner. The panel below the desk, which wrapped around the underside, acted both as support for the desktop and modesty board.
We paired this with an almost snow white cast concrete element behind which cables, computers, and mugs of tea, could hide. Steamed pear detailing in the drawers and cabinets, and 5mm grey machine felt in the desktop cable gromit completes the project.
This project was designed, developed and made in collaboration with Scott Laverie, of Old School Fabrications.
